Cialis should never be used in patients who are taking any form of nitrates such as nitroglycerin (used in heart patients for coronary artery narrowing or chest pain), organic nitrites, or "poppers" (amyl nitrate). Less than 10% of men using the Cialis develop muscle aches or headaches, which increase in intensity at the higher drug doses. Cialis comes in various dosages and it is suggested that starting with the lowest dose tablet and working up in dosage if necessary. Cialis can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, which may lead to unconsciousness when taken in combination with some anti-hypertensive drugs or with nitroglycerin. This can have devastating effects. Cialis is a prescription medication and should not be taken without a thorough evaluation by a competent urologist or other physician. Remember, impotence is often an early indicator of heart disease, diabetes, serious underlying neurologic conditions, or some types of cancer. Taking Cialis without a full medical evaluation could exacerbate these life-threatening conditions. For example, a patient taking any of these drugs with unknown heart disease, as the underlying cause for the erectile dysfunction, could suffer a heart attack (coronary thrombosis), while having intercourse with his new found Cialis induced erection.
